Tumblrize: "Sun Days" by Chang Terhune
This article was posted to Tumblr and Posterous.

Greetings!

“Sun Days” began as a story when I saw a picture of this young woman in combat gear standing in the middle of a jungle scene, the rain around her broken up slightly by sunlight streaming down from on high. She looked feminine, sexy, strong and vulnerable all at once; like a woman. Something about the image was so moving that I began to wonder about her and why she stood amidst all this flora with such a peaceful expression on her face and such a big gun in her hand.

And Sgt. Claudia Wao was born on that day.

Also I must have been reading about ancient explorers too because I decided she came from a world where the Chinese didn’t abandon world exploration in the 15th century but continued on and eventually took over the world whereas Europe and by extension America became more isolated. Oh, and communism didn’t really take over like it did in our world. It’s fascinating to think about for me, really. As the story proceeded to pour forth I began to think of what her mission was, what the world she was on was like and before you knew it I had the tale of a very simple mission gone very wrong.

It’s somewhat of a work in progress but like many stories it seems compelled to come forth and be told and then spoken aloud. So I hope you like it, warts and all. I think it’s either the first chapter or the beginning of a new novel. Great, I need one of those like I need a hole in the head. :)

I also felt compelled to bring it out now in a sort of tribute to Ray Bradbury after his passing. Bradbury was a huge influence on me as a kid, especially the story “All Summer in a Day.” “Sun Days” is kind of the opposite of that as you will find out when you listen, which I hope you will.

As always, please feel free to donate something towards my “Maine Navel Lint Museum” fund.

Tumblrize: MUSIC MONDAYS: This is where it gets funky...
This article was posted to Tumblr and Posterous.

Kats & Kittens,

More government work has kept me from my self-appointed duty as music master to the two of you. ;)

My apologies.

DAVID BOWIE “ASHES TO ASHES”

Been listening to a lot of the same stuff the last couple of weeks, especially a lot of Budos Band. As I’ve raved about them endlessly I didn’t want to just post all their stuff again. So there’s that. Then I got to listening to Ashes to Ashes by David Bowie a lot. You know how that is.

I mean can you imagine a 5 year old wanting to hear a song about a coked out ex-fake astronaut? Me, too! This is too cute and just weird as shit to here live.

BOSSANOVA “HEY SUGAR”

At work we’ve been using Pandora almost all the time for music to play between classes. I like the - surprise - Budos Band station. SO there’s more of that. Yesterday it played this gem which I believe is my new theme song!

Dig that? I say DIG THAT!!!

MISSY ELLIOTT - THE RAIN

Errybody knows this song. But not many know its many progenitors. Like this one:

Space chicks. That sing. I love that.

Then there’s Missy’s jam:

When I first heard this I knew it was a new age of hiphop. I miss stuff like this. It’s also a nice little teaser for my next podcast. ;)

So that’s the tunes what happen to a Chang on a Monday. Hope you can get with the scene.

Piece, tile & grout!

Tumblrize: "Mirrorstates" by Chang Terhune
This article was posted to Tumblr and Posterous.

So I wrote this story “MirrorStates” last year. I think it’s a bloody good read and I enjoy it.

As with all my stories when I write and subsequently edit the hell out of them, I read them aloud to get a sense of how the language is flowing. This is incredibly important to me. I also hear, in my head, songs that enhance or compliment the reading. I’ve always thought I could put the two together in an interesting way. After years of wanting to do this I finally sat down last weekend with 45 pages, a cup of tea, a Snowball mic, a laptop and recorded my reading of it. Added some music and effects and voila! The words are mine and the music is mine. It’s fun to put them together.

So if you’d give it a listen I’d appreciate it. Feel free to comment on the blog itself, please. If you like it I would hope you’ll throw something in the Silicon Tip Jar so I can get a bone for the dog and a tin o’ meat for the cat (the dog will eat that, too, if he can get his jaws on it. The meat not the cat. Although…). And please feel free to tell your friends, share on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr and wherever else you want. Link it like a mofo!

Thanks!

So without further ado I present to you “MirrorStates” by Chang Terhune, a story of love, loss and dancing in a time when the impossible goes horribly wrong at the VLHC at Cern. I hope you enjoy it.

Here’s the tip jar…

Tumblrize: RIP: Ray Bradbury
This article was posted to Tumblr and Posterous.

So it goes…

I could bore you with the entire story of my first exposure to his work but it’s no more or less exciting than Scalzi’s or anyone else’s. I think Cory Doctorw’s piece at BoinBoing is especially wonderful and of course you must read the piece he wrote for the New Yorker.

He fired my imagination up like a paper balloon. What better thing is there for a writer to do to any mind but especially a young one?

Thank you, Mr. Bradbury.
