Whew! It’s a warm one. Had a great weekend of chilling lakeside in the new skull chair. Game of thrones, indeed.
DEVO: ARE YOU EXPERIENCED
This popped into my head this boring when I woke up. Not one of my favorite Devo albums but somehow this song used to bring me to tears, especially when Mark would sing, “Beautiful mutants…” I thin it actually has the power of the original but of course de-evolutionized for the future. Pity there isn’t a better quality version of it up on YouTube. Witness:
DAVID BOWIE
I think by now it should be perfectly clear that I am a big fan of Bowie. He’s a permanent fixture on my iPod and I’ve been known to listen to Ahes to Ashes for days on end. Via Dangerous Minds I came across this gem of a clip from the Dick Cavett show.
This song, as it clearly states, eventually became FAME. I love the clip because it’s way overheated levels make the sign bang all the more. Bowie is funky, funky, funky in a way most - haters gonna hate - white guys can’t pull off. He’s also coked out the gills in this clip! It was a bad period for him but he still manages to pull off an amazing performance. The backing band is incredible. I wonder if he’d stuck with them for a while more how they would have sounded (I know Carlos Almomar has been with him on and off since this time). Mmm! Funk!
HEROES
YEs, we’ve all heard Heroes a million times and will here it a million more. Perhaps two million if you come to my house on any given day. Via YouTUbe roulette I came across this live version and it kills. The band is awesome, though the mix has the bass guitar up a bit high for my tastes. It features Adrian Belew playing Robert Fripp’s part and of course nailing it and then some. In the comments section there’s some debate about whether or not Belew is the most underrated guitarist in all of rock. That’s a hard one to qualify but I will say he’s up there (please note Calos ALomar is there behind Bowie. 4 years after the proviso clip!). Enjoy!
